Voter registration deadline is today

Today is the last day you can register to vote or change your voting address for this November’s elections. Registration can be done online and takes only a few minutes. Get more information at the Virginia Department of Elections website, and do it before the deadline at 5 p.m. today.

Penn Daw shops profiled

There’s been a lot of change in the Penn Daw area recently, including the opening of The Shelby apartments in 2014 and the currently in-development South Alex project. But one small strip of shops at the intersection of North Kings Highway and School Street has managed to survive. The Penn Daw Village shopping center is still going strong with a diverse array of businesses, from Chin’s Kitchen to Great Southern Tattoo.

Body camera proposal

The Fairfax County Police recently proposed a body camera pilot program for officers, and if it’s approved the Mount Vernon police district — which includes most of the Richmond Highway area — is one of two precincts that would get cameras.

Fairfax County Police Chief Edwin Roessler Jr. gave a presentation last Tuesday on the proposed 90-day pilot program, which would cost an estimated $676,152. In addition to Mount Vernon, the Mason police district would also use the cameras.The county’s Ad Hoc Police Practices Review Commission recommended in 2015 that patrol officers begin wearing body cameras.
