Construction of the Huntington levee remains on schedule and on budget despite heavy rains this summer, Mount Vernon Supervisor Dan Storck announced in a newsletter Friday.

Storck said he visited the levee site on Aug. 16 to speak with staff and evaluate progress on the project.

“The levee and pumping station are critical for protecting homes and property from flooding in the Huntington neighborhood,” Storck said in the newsletter. “The good news is the project remains on schedule and on budget for a spring 2019 completion.”

Heavy rain in late July caused street flooding in the Huntington area and forced some residents to move their cars to higher ground. For the month of July, the Huntington area received more than nine inches of rain, six inches more than July 2016. So far in August the area has received around 3.5 inches of rain.

The levee is designed to protect a residential area that has been hit hard by floods from nearby Cameron Run in the past two decades. Construction began in February. Concrete placement for the pumping station began in June and is still underway, according to an update on the county’s website.

Once completed, a 2,800-foot-long earthen embankment and concrete I-wall levee will stretch from near Fenwick Drive to the Riverside Apartments. The pumping station facility will be located at the east end of the levee. There will also be 4,800 feet of recreational trails along the top of the levee and around the ponding area.
