Man charged with malicious wounding after incident in Fairhaven area

A man is in custody after a violent altercation in the Fairhaven area last night that prompted a large police response.

The 30-year-old man faces charges of felony malicious wounding and misdemeanor destruction of property.

Police responded to the incident in the 2500 block of Fairhaven Avenue shortly before 10 p.m. last night. The suspect allegedly fled the scene after the wounding, prompting a search by officers, K9 units and the police helicopter, a police spokeswoman said. The suspect was found and arrested a short distance from the crime scene, according to the spokeswoman.

The 56-year-old victim was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The spokeswoman said the suspect and victim were known to each other, and that the incident was not domestic in nature.

Fairfax County court records show that the suspect was out on bail after being arrested June 28 on charges of felony destruction of property, misdemeanor disorderly conduct and felony drug possession.

Incidents reported in Wednesday’s blotter:

Unlawful entry: Around 9:50 a.m. yesterday staff and potential residents went to an apartment in the 3100 block of Southgate Drive and found the interior chain lock engaged on the door. Officers quickly arrived and searched the apartment, which was supposed to be vacant. During their search they found a 24-year-old man hiding in a closet. The man admitted to entering the location to stay the night. He was arrested and taken to the Mount Vernon Station, and was charged with unlawful entry.

Burglary: Staff left work around 3:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon, and returned Saturday around 8:00 a.m. When they came back to the business, in the 7000 block of Canterbury Lane, they found that someone had broken into the building and stole money.
