Darwin Barker named new principal of Carl Sandburg

Darwin Barker has been selected as the new principal of Carl Sandburg Middle School. 

Barker served most recently as an assistant principal at Luther Jackson Middle School in Falls Church. He has worked in education for more than 18 years, and previously taught at Lanier Middle School in Fairfax and at Gildersleeve Middle School in Newport News, Va.

Barker graduated from Hampton University with bachelor’s degree in biology and earned his Master of Arts degree in Education from the University of Phoenix, according to FCPS. He has a Virginia professional license in Administration and Supervision K-12 and earned his Education Specialist in Educational Leadership from Old Dominion University.

Barker takes over after the tumultuous exit of Terrence Yarborough, who was charged with assaulting a student earlier this week after a lengthy investigation into an incident in the school’s cafeteria in early April. Yarborough, who had been at the school since the 2010-2011 school year, resigned in May after being put on leave the previous month.
