New principal selected for Waynewood Elementary
Katie Reynolds has been selected as the new principal of Waynewood Elementary School in the Fort Hunt area.
Currently an assistant principal at Lane Elementary School in the Kingstowne area, Reynolds will start at Waynewood effective July 5. She takes over for James Meier, who is retiring after 31 years in the Fairfax County Public School system. He served as Waynewood’s principal for the past 11 years.
Reynolds’ resume includes more than 15 years experience as an educator, according to FCPS spokesman John Torre. Before becoming an assistant principal, she worked for 10 years as a teacher at Belvedere Elementary School in Falls Church. For three of those years Reynolds served as an advanced academics resource teacher.
Reynolds has deep roots in FCPS and the Mount Vernon area. She attended Stratford Landing Elementary and Carl Sandburg Middle School before attending Bishop Ireton. And she worked as a student teacher at Waynewood while in college.
“We are thrilled that she has strong ties to Mount Vernon and we are thrilled to welcome her,” said Karen Corbett Sanders, the Mount Vernon District Representative to the school board. “We are confident that Waynewood will continue being a great community school.”
Reynolds is a graduate of James Madison University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. She earned her Master of Education, Curriculum and Instruction and Master of Education, Education Leadership degrees from George Mason University.
Waynewood was recently named the 72nd best public elementary school in Virginia by niche.com. The ranking was the highest among any elementary school in the Richmond Highway area.
Waynewood is also in the midst of a large renovation project, which began earlier this year and is expected to be completed by fall 2019.
Great news ! Congratulations Katie !
