Man dies after motorcycle collides with truck on Richmond Highway

The scene of Friday’s fatal collision between a motorcycle and a pickup truck (center) on Richmond Highway.
A man died Friday afternoon after his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck at the intersection of Richmond Highway and Holly Hill Road.
The impact threw the driver of the motorcycle, who has not been identified yet, approximately 50 feet on to the service road between Route 1 and the Cherry Arms Apartments. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Three people in a Dodge Ram pickup truck were injured and taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. when the motorcycle slammed into the front right side of the truck, which was turning left into Cherry Arms. Police said that the motorcycle was traveling at “a high rate of speed, ” and the force of the collision was so great that the motorcycle impaled front end of the truck.
The crash briefly closed northbound Richmond Highway, and created a large rush-hour backup. One northbound lane was opened while police investigated, and traffic remained backed up past Arlington Drive more than an hour and a half after the wreck.
The crash is the second fatal motorcycle wreck in the county in seven days. Last Thursday, a 45-year-old died after his motorcycle left the road on Telegraph Road near Beulah Street and hit a retaining wall.
