Online petition started in support of former Carl Sandburg principal
An online petition has been started in support of Terrence Yarborough, the former Carl Sandburg Middle School principal who resigned last week.
The petition, started by “Members of Carl Sandburg Community,” praises the former principal for improving the school during his tenure and expresses concerns over the future of the school. It is addressed to Region 3 Assistant Superintendent Terry Dade, Region 3 Executive Principal Grace Taylor and the entire FCPS school board.
“For the last seven years, Mr. Yarborough has transformed the halls and classrooms of Sandburg from a school that was plagued by problems and a poor reputation to a school that is now highly regarded within the community … [w]e need FCPS to understand how deeply concerned we are going forward without his guidance and leadership,” the petition says.
Yarborough had been principal at the school since the 2010-2011 school year. He went on leave in early April, and no reason for the leave was given by FCPS.
On May 3, Yarborough announced his resignation in a letter to the Sandburg community, saying that he planned to move to North Carolina to be closer to his family.
As of Sunday night, the petition had more than 100 signatures and more than 30 comments. The supporters identify themselves as both current and former parents of Sandburg students, with many commenters praising Yarborough’s leadership and emphasizing improvements they saw in the school during his tenure.
Can someone please explain why he left? And what’s going on? This doesn’t give any details.
If it was for a positive reason, wouldn’t we all know? But since it’s sudden and secretive, it can’t be good. I don’t see how the Fairfax County government can conceal this kind of information from taxpayers.
