Weekend police blotter: Teens arrested after mugging; armed robbery in Penn Daw

Three teenagers — one 18 year old and two juveniles — were arrested Friday night after a man was mugged near the intersection of Arlington Drive and Republic Court, not far from the Mount Vernon Square apartments.

Kenny Joel Lezama of Lanham, Md. and two boys, ages 15 and 16, are accused of a pulling a gun on a man around 8:30 p.m. The victim tried to flee, but was assaulted by the trio, according to police. The assailants also took the man’s wallet during the incident, police said.

The three suspects were arrested a short time later. All three were charged with robbery and use of a firearm in commission of a felony.

Cricket Wireless robbed

A Cricket Wireless store in the Penn Daw area was held up Saturday evening around 8 p.m.

Police say the assailant walked into the store at 6233 Richmond Highway, pulled a handgun and demanded cash. He fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of money, according to police.

No injuries were reported.

Assault at Walmart

A suspected shoplifter assaulted a security guard at the Hybla Valley Walmart on Sunday afternoon, triggering a search involving K9 units and the Fairfax1 helicopter.

The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. when the guard noticed two men acting suspiciously, police said. The guard, who believed one of the men was hiding merchandise, followed the pair out of the store.

The suspects began running, and the guard attempted to notify a nearby business about the suspects. At that point, according to police, one of the suspects ran towards the guard and “[t]he victim heard what sounded like a gunshot.” No weapon was seen however, and nobody was injured in the incident.

A search of the nearby area failed to locate the suspects.
