Woodlawn Elementary School secured during police search Thursday morning

Woodlawn Elementary

Woodlawn Elementary School is located at 8505 Highland Lane.

Woodlawn Elementary School was briefly put on “secure the building” status yesterday morning as police pursued a larceny suspect nearby.

Police eventually caught the 17-year-old suspect with a K9 dog, and the “secure the building” status — where activities continue inside but nobody is allowed in or out of the school — was lifted after about 35 minutes, according to a Fairfax County Public Schools spokesman.

The incident began around 9:15 a.m. near the intersection of Pole Road and Del Norte Court, according to police. The teen allegedly met a woman to purchase a phone but grabbed the phone and ran away without paying, police said.

Responding officers determined the suspect was someone familiar with them and wanted in Fairfax County and other jurisdictions. Police pulled over the suspect not far from the alleged larceny, and the teen fled the vehicle, according to police.

Several units responded, and the suspect was located and apprehended near Woodlawn Street. The entire incident was over by 10:20 a.m., according to the police’s Twitter updates.

The suspect was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries due to a bite from the police dog. He was then taken to the juvenile detention center, and charged with larceny. Other local warrants were served, and police said additional charges could be pending.
