Trail improvements currently underway at Huntley Meadows Park are part of an effort to meet compliance standards outlined by the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), according to a Fairfax County Park Authority spokeswoman.

The work, which began in late November, is expected to be completed next week if the weather cooperates, spokeswoman Judy Pedersen said.

Improvements include a repaved trail from the Lockheed Boulevard parking lot to the nature center entrance, repaving of the walk to the frog pond. and re-dusting of the stone dust trail from the nature center to the wetlands boardwalk. The grill areas at the picnic pavilion are also being re-done to meet compliance standards, according to Pedersen.

The total cost for the project is $124, 479.50. Peterson said the work was part of the Park Authority’s ADA Transition Plan and driven by new standards and a desire for increased compliance, as well as by patron concerns.
