Police blotter: Erroneous report of car break-in turns up stolen handgun

A Woodbridge man originally thought to be breaking into a car ended up in trouble for a different reason early on Sunday, according to today’s Fairfax County Police blotter.

The 21-year-old suspect faces three counts of having a concealed weapon, receiving and/or possessing a stolen firearm and possession of marijuana.

The suspect was reportedly seen attempting to break into a car near the intersection of Sacramento Drive and Bedford Terrace around 12:30 a.m. on New Year’s Day, police said. When officers arrived, they determined the car actually belonged to him. But the officers smelled marijuana and saw a handgun “in plan view” in the car, according to police.

A search of the car turned up three handguns, as well as drugs, according to police. The suspect was arrested and taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.
