Mount Vernon boys beat T.C. Williams behind Kamara’s 29 points

Alpha Kamara led all scorers with 29 points.
Mount Vernon did not look like a team that had yet to win a district game Friday night against T.C. Williams.
The Majors, behind an offensive explosion from senior guard Alpha Kamara, led most of the game and withstood all of the Titans’ counterpunches en route to an 80-68 win.

The victory is the Majors first in Patriot District play, and ends a three-game losing streak.
Head coach Lou Golden said that a tough 83-72 loss earlier this week to West Potomac played a big role in how the Majors approached the T.C. game. Against the Wolverines on Tuesday, Mount Vernon (5-9) fell behind 21-2 during a dismal first quarter. But the Majors clawed their way back into the contest over the final three quarters, playing even with West Po team currently in first place in the district.
Golden told his squad afterward that if they could keep up that level of execution and intensity against T.C. Williams — or any opponent — they’d win.
“I said [Tuesday] that pretty much if they can carry that forward, there’s no team that should be able to beat us,” Golden said. “Hopefully they can carry that through the rest of the conference play.”
Kamara, who led all scorers with 29 points, set the tone early for Mount Vernon with a three-pointer on the Majors’ third possession. The Titans struggled all game to contain Kamara, and when they did, fellow guard Josiah Jimboy (15 points) and Jason Lewis (14 points) stepped up to make key buckets.
The Majors led by one at halftime, then took control of the game in the third quarter. Back-to-back three pointers by Jimboy helped Mount Vernon build a double-digit lead in the third, and Kamara converted a four-point play with just over four minutes left in the fourth that put the home crowd into a frenzy and effectively sealed the game.
“He can fill it up,” Golden said of Kamara. “He’s the beginning and the end for everything we do.”
Next up for the Majors is home matchup with Annandale on Tuesday.
