$100K winner

A Richmond Highway-area man started off 2017 by winning $100,000 in the Virginia Lottery, the agency announced yesterday.

Marvin Gonzalez, who lives in the Route 1 area according to a Virginia Lottery spokesman, purchased the winning ticket at a Safeway in the Mount Vernon Square shopping center on Richmond Highway. Gonzalez was playing 10x The Money, a scratch off game with a top prize of $100,000.

The odds of winning the top prize in 10x The Money are 1 in 1,049,143, according to the Lottery press release.

Gonzalez told Lottery officials he planned on saving the money.

Remembrance for Frank Medico

Frank Medico, a former Virginia House delegate from the 44th district and a longtime resident of the Mount Vernon area, is remembered in this week’s Mount Vernon Gazette.

Medico died Dec. 30 at 92. A Republican, he served in the House of Delegates from 1982-1990. Previously he had worked as an auditor for the Government Accounting Office. Medico stayed active in the community long after deciding not to seek re-election at the end of his fourth term, and frequently gave input on local issues to local legislators and newspapers.
