A fire around midnight displaced 35 residents from this building at the Beacon Hill Apartments.

Firefighters needed to rescue six residents after a two-alarm fire broke out around midnight at the Beacon Hill Apartments in the 6700 block of Tower Drive.

One  woman  was taken to a hospital for evaluation, according to Deputy Chief Brad Cochrane of the Fairfax Fire and Rescue Department.

Firefighters from the Penn Daw station responded to a fire in a third floor unit shortly after midnight, Cochrane said in a video released by the department. Upon arrival, firefighters used ladders to evacuate five residents on a balcony in the rear of the building and one resident on a balcony in the front of the building. Other firefighters helped more residents out using the steps, and the fire was completely put out in about 35 minutes.

Thirty-five residents were displaced, Cochrane said. Displaced residents are being assisted by the Red Cross and building management, according to a fire department news release issued Saturday.

In addition to the people rescued, one cat was pulled from the building by firefighters and reunited with its owner, according to the department news release.

A candle in the bedroom of one of the units caused the blaze, the fire department said. Damage to the building is estimated to be around $87,500.

The building did have working smoke alarms, which awakened many residents, the fire department said.
