A car knocked down a utility pole early Friday morning on Huntington Avenue, briefly knocking out a power to thousands of homes and closing the road until early this afternoon.

The crash occurred around 3:30 a.m. in the 2600 block, not far from the intersection with Telegraph Road. Details about the accident remain unclear; the police information office was closed today for the Inauguration Day holiday and a spokeswoman reached reached via Twitter had not heard about the crash. According to a police officer on the scene hours after the incident, the driver fled the scene.

Pictures provided by a Dominion Virginia Power spokesman showed a black sedan with major damage to the front of the car at the scene. The impact knocked the pole and wires across the westbound lanes of Huntington Avenue, and the entire road was closed through the morning rush hour.

Some 3,800 customers lost power for about an hour after the accident, according to Dominion Virginia Power spokesman Chuck Penn. The commercial building on the block the pole went down on remained without power through the morning. Repairs were completed at 4:25 p.m., according to Penn.
