Construction of new water main underway at Lee District Park
Construction has started on a new water main that will run from Telegraph Road to the Groveton area near Richmond Highway.
The 24-inch diameter main will be approximately 10,300 feet, starting on Rose Hill Drive and winding through Lee District Park, down South Kings Highway and ending at the intersection of Groveton Street and Denora Drive.
Fairfax Water is overseeing the project, which is expected to be complete by fall 2017. The company says the new main will provide additional water transmission capacity for the eastern part of the county, and replace aging water mains along portions of South Kings Highway, South Benson Drive, Amlong Avenue, Harrison Lane, and Groveton Street.
Work on the main is being performed by Garney Construction.
A large portion of the main will run through Lee District Park, where work is already underway. Susan Miller, a public affairs officer for Fairfax Water, said most of the pipe work being done at Lee District Park should be complete early in 2017. Restoration of the area where the work was done won’t happen until the spring, however.
Miller said there will be some minor disruptions in water service during the project. Fairfax Water will notify any residents 48 hours ahead of time, Miller said.
“[T]his project has been closely coordinated with the Fairfax County Park Authority and Fairfax County Public Schools as it relates to impacts on their properties,” Miller said.
