Satuday notes: Local All-Mets, Holiday Ice Show, SoberRide starts

Local stars make All-Met teams

Some local prep athletes were recognized in The Washington Post’s fall All-Met team, which was released Friday.

West Potomac wide receiver Branden Lisenby and Hayfield wide receiver Brian Cobbs were each named to the 2nd team offense. Lisenby, a senior, finished the season with 47 catches for 1,067 yards and 16 touchdowns. Cobbs, a junior, finished with 74 catches for 1172 yards and 13 TDs.

Mount Vernon running back Derrian Newton, West Potomac quarterback Mark Ellis and Hayfield quarterback Jacob Keeney were each selected as honorable mention All-Mets. Ellis and Keeney are both seniors, while Newton is a junior. 

The only non-football player from the corridor area to be recognized was Edison senior Daniell Emhof, who was an honorable mention forward in field hockey. See the full lists at The Washington Post.

Ice show is today

The Mount Vernon RECenter Ice Arena is hosting its annual Holiday Ice Show today from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The show will feature group routines by studetns from the ice arena’s group lessons, and solo routines by other skaters. There’s also a promised visit by “a very special guest”

SoberRide program begins

SoberRide, a free cab ride program for would-be impaired drivers, began its holiday hours of operation on Friday.

An initiative of the Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP), SoberRide will operate from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. until New Year’s Day. Customers 21 years or older can call 1-800-200-8294 for a free ride up to a $30 fare.
