Police officers from the Mount Vernon District station provided a helping hand to a family devastated by tragedy last month.

According to a Facebook post from the police department, officers Corey Clark, Robert Kitchens and Israel Latorre came up with the idea to do something for two children whose mother was murdered in November.

Yesenia Membrano-Diaz, 35, was stabbed to death outside their home in the 8400 block of Diablo Court on Nov. 29. Her husband, Ricardo Molina-Martinez, was arrested later than day and charged with second-degree murder. He is currently in jail awaiting trial.

Membrano-Diaz’s two children, 16 and 8, are now living with relatives who’ve moved in so that the kids can continue at the same schools, said Capt. Shawn Martin.

Clark, Kitchens and Latorre, as well as their squadmates, collected donations from local businesses and organizations, including T.J. Maxx, Costco, Covanta Energy, the South County Government Center, and Toys for Tots. In the end, the officers were able to deliver more than $1,000 worth of food and gifts to the children.
