Pedestrian dies after being struck by car on Frye Road
An area man died early this morning from injuries sustained after being hit by a car while crossing Frye Road yesterday afternoon.
David Baines, 57, died around 1 a.m. at Inova Fairfax Hospital, according to Fairfax Police. Baines had been struck around 5:40 p.m. Thursday by a 2005 Mercedes ES 500 sedan near the intersection of Richmond Highway and Frye Road.
Police say the driver was going southbound on Richmond Highway and turned right onto westbound Frye Road before hitting Baines, who was “near the crosswalk,” according to police. Baines, who lived in the 8400 block of Richmond Highway, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The 52-year-old driver of the Mercedes stayed on the scene. The crash is still under investigation, but speed and alcohol do not appear to be a factor, police said.
The speed limit on Frye Road is 25 miles per hour. The crosswalk closest to the intersection of Frye Road and Richmond Highway is about 100 feet west of Richmond Highway. There is no crosswalk at the corner.
However, there is a newly constructed sidewalk on Route 1 on both sides of Frye that is part of a larger project underway at the intersection. There is also a new median strip on Frye near the intersection that pedestrians could be seen using for refuge while crossing the street on Friday afternoon.
This is the second pedestrian death in the Richmond Highway corridor in less than a month and the third since August. A 69-year-old man killed on Route 1 in the Huntington area on Nov. 12, and a 56-year-old man was killed on Route 1 near the old Mount Vernon High School on Aug. 31. No charges have been filed in either case.
