Police: Hybla Valley man tried to set woman on fire with toddler in car
A man is behind bars after allegedly trying to set a woman on fire in a car this morning at the Mount Vernon Square Apartments, police announced today. The couple’s 1-year-old child was in the car at the time of the incident, but neither him nor the victim were injured.
The 26-year-old suspect is charged with attempted malicious wounding and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Thomas, who lives in the 2600 block of Arlington Drive where the incident took place, allegedly poured an unnamed flammable liquid on the 26-year-old mother of their child, police said.
The victim had arrived to drop off the child while on her way to work around 8:20 a.m. According to police, the suspect jumped in the women’s car, poured liquid on her and attempted to set her on fire. The victim ran and the suspect began to chase her, but ran away after her screaming attracted attention, police said.
Police found the suspect a short time later at his home, and he was taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.

Subway robbed
The Subway in the Woodlawn Shopping Center was robbed Monday night, according today’s Fairfax County Police blotter.
Around 8:45 p.m., a man walked into the restaurant at 8768 Richmond Highway and sat down for a moment. He then then got up and pulled a handgun on employees. The assailant grabbed cash from the register before fleeing on foot, police said.
No injuries were reported.
