One person was taken to the hospital and dozens were displaced after a 2-alarm fire Saturday evening at the Woodlawn Garden Apartments at 8494 Richmond Highway.

Firefighters responded to report of smoke at the complex around 6 p.m. When crews arrived on the scene, flames were seen shooting through the roof of the building, and a second alarm was called in.

The fire was quickly extinguished, but damage was serious enough to displace approximately 67 residents, the fire department said Sunday. Forty residents stayed in a nearby shelter last night, according to Red Cross spokesman Paul Carden.

At least one person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, according to Fairfax Fire and Rescue Department spokeswoman Ashley Hildebrandt. No firefighters were injured battling the blaze, Hildebrandt said.

The fire originated in the attic of the three-story building, the fire department said Sunday. Investigators determined that the cause of the fire was mechanical failure of a natural gas furnace flue. Heat escaping from the broken flue ignited what the fire department called “ordinary combustibles” in the attic.

Because of the location of the fire, smoke alarms did not go off in the building. A resident noticed the fire and alerted the other occupants, according to the fire department.

Damage from the blaze is estimated to be $227,000.
