Illegal signs to be removed from more Richmond Highway-area roads

These illegal signs advertising a junk car-buying service are a common site on area roads.

Fairfax County has added 28 new roads to its illegal sign removal program, including six in the Richmond Highway area, the county announced last week.

The Sheriff’s Office, which operates the removal program using inmates from the county jail, will start picking up signs on Boswell Drive, Fairhaven Avenue, Fordson Road, Lockheed Boulevard, Old Richmond Highway and Sherwood Hall Lane. Signs will only be removed from the portions of those roads that fall inside the Richmond Highway Commercial Revitalization District.

In addition to the roads listed above, the county had already been removing signs from Richmond Highway, Telegraph Road, North and South Kings Highway, Fort Hunt Road and Franconia Road.

Back in June, the county publicly named some of the businesses that it had fined for repeatedly posting signs illegally. The most heavily penalized company, called “We Pay Up To $100-$200 Junk Cars,” was fined $3,500, but continues to put up signs around the Route 1 area and the rest of the county. The business has not paid the fine, and it’s been difficult to get in touch with a representative from the business or even determine who owns it, a county official said.

An attempt on Monday to reach someone at one of the numbers listed on the signs was unsuccessful.
