How the Richmond Highway corridor voted on election day

Fairfax County overwhelmingly voted for Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump on Tuesday, with 64 percent of county residents picking her, compared to 28 percent for Trump.

The Richmond Highway area was no different, as voters in the Mount Vernon and Lee Districts, which straddle the west and east sides for Route 1, were strong supporters of Clinton. Richmond Highway also contributed to an easy win for Rep. Don Beyer, a Democratic incumbent who won reelection in the House of Representatives’ 8th District — which covers most of the Mount Vernon and Lee districts — over Republican challenger Charles Hernick.

Trump did not win a single precinct in either district, while Hernick was able to win one precinct in the Mount Vernon.

Voters picked Clinton overall by a more than 2-1 margin in the Mount Vernon. Westgate was the most competitive precinct in the district, with only 58 votes separating Clinton and Trump. Westgate, which includes parts of Fort Belvoir and the Mount Vernon neighborhood, was also the only precinct in the Richmond Highway area to favor Hernick over Beyer.

The Bucknell precinct, which borders Route 1 from Beacon Hill Road south to the Hybla Valley area, saw four times as many people voted for Clinton over Trump — the largest margin in her favor in the Mount Vernon.

The Lee District was even more supportive of Clinton, voting her by a nearly 3-1 margin. The Hayfield precinct was the most competitive in the district, with 224 votes (out of a total 2,013 cast) separating the two candidates.

Fairfax County’s Meals Tax referendum was rejected by 54 percent of voters. Every single district in the county had a majority of “no” votes.
