Pedestrian struck and killed by SUV on Richmond Highway
A pedestrian was fatally struck and killed by an SUV on Richmond Highway this morning in the Woodlawn area.
The crash occurred around 6:15 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the 8300 block, directly across from the old Mount Vernon High School. Police say a 2008 Chevrolet Yukon struck Aaron Nelson McCullough, 56, as he was walking across the road.
The force of the impact was severe enough to knock McCullough out of his shoes. He died at the scene.
The driver of the striking vehicle, a 69-year-old woman, stayed on the scene, according to police. Speed and alcohol are not believed to be involved, police said, and no charges are pending against the driver.
McCullough was not in a crosswalk, according to police.
Police reconstruction teams closed all but one lane of the road to investigate the crash, with southbound traffic getting diverted onto Gregory Drive. Around 10 a.m., all lanes of Richmond Highway were reopened.
