Overnight flooding shuts down Route 1 near Fort Belvoir

Richmond Highway was closed in both directions for more than four hours early this morning after storms caused the roadway to flood near Fort Belvoir.

No accidents or injuries were reported in the flooding, which began around 1 a.m., according to Fairfax County Police Department spokesman Don Gotthardt.

“Local construction caused mud and water to flow across Route 1 and there was about 2-4 feet of standing water, which took some time to recede,” Gotthardt said in an email.

The flooding was in an area of Route 1 that is being widened. An email and a phone call to VDOT were not immediately returned.

The flooding occurred near the intersection of Belvoir Court and Richmond Highway, which is just north of Fort Belvoir’s Tulley Gate. Eventually the entire segment of Route 1 between Jeff Todd Way and the Fairfax County Parkway were closed to traffic, according to news reports.

The storms that rolled through the area overnight dropped .4 inches of rain in less than six hours, according to the National Weather Service.
