1 dead, 15 injured after tour bus and vehicle collide on GW Parkway

The scene of Tuesday’s deadly collision between a tour bus and another vehicle on the George Washington Parkway near Mount Vernon.

A tour bus carrying 19 passengers overturned after colliding with a vehicle on the George Washington Parkway this afternoon, leaving one person dead and sending 15 others to the hospital.

Three of the bus passengers are in critical condition, according the U.S. Park Police. The name of the deceased bus passenger has not been released, no information about the age or sex was available as of this posting.

The crash occurred shortly before 5 p.m. south of Stratford Lane, not far from the Mount Vernon estate. The bus, traveling northbound, skidded on its side after hitting the southbound car, according to Sgt. Anna Rose of the U.S. Park Police. The bus and vehicle each ended up off of the roadway, Rose said.

Both the driver and passenger of the car were hospitalized, as were 13 people on the bus.

The passengers on the bus were all Chinese citizens, according to Rose.

Before first responders arrived at the scene, an unknown number of people at the scene helped tip the bus back on to its wheels in order to free some of the injured passengers, according to Rose.

At this point the Park Police are not releasing information about the cause of the collision. The Parkway is expected to be closed between Stratford Lane and the Mount Vernon Circle for an unknown number of hours as the investigation into the crash continues.
