Rubio, Clinton were top choices of Route 1 corridor on Super Tuesday

Donald Trump ended up winning Virginia in yesterday’s Republican presidential primary, but he was not the GOP’s top candidate in Southeast Fairfax. Voters in the Mount Vernon and Lee districts of the county preferred Marco Rubio, according to the unofficial Republican primary results posted on the county’s website.

Rubio was also the overall winner in Fairfax, topping Trump by almost 20,000 votes. Trump did manage to win two precincts in Lee District (Fairfield and Crestwood), and won three precincts in Mount Vernon District (Woodley, Gunston and Woodlawn).

Although he was a distant fourth statewide, John Kasich was third in the GOP race in Fairfax, topping Ted Cruz by approximately 6,000 votes. Kasich was third in both the Mount Vernon and Lee Districts.

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton topped Bernie Sanders in both the Lee and Mount Vernon districts as she cruised to her win in the state. In both Lee and Mount Vernon she topped Sanders by more than a 2-1 margin, according to the county’s unofficial results. Like Rubio, Clinton swept all of Fairfax’s districts en route to a decisive victory.
