Fairfax County Police are investigating a homicide after a man was found stabbed near a trail in the Rose Hill area on Friday evening.

According to a police news release, William G. Martines-Palma, 29, was found unresponsive by someone in the area around 8 p.m. Martines-Palma had been stabbed in the leg, police said, and was transported to the Inova Springfield Healthplex before being moved to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he was pronounced dead late Friday night.

Martines-Palma lived in the Rose Hill Apartments on Celtic Drive, according to police. Neighbors interviewed Saturday pointed out the blood-stained spot in a grassy area behind the Rose Hill Apartments where Martines-Palma was found. They described the trail, which leads to the Kingstowne area, as being safe and said it is very popular with walkers and joggers in the area.

Senior citizens could be seen walking down the trail on Saturday afternoon, and a neighbor who lives in townhouses that borders part of the trail said children often play in the open area where Martines-Palma was found.

Update on March 27: A GoFundMe page has been started to help cover the costs of Martines-Palma’s funeral.
