Future of burned hotel on Richmond Highway still unclear
The future of the former Quality Inn & Suites at 8849 Richmond Highway, which has sat largely untouched since a massive April 2015 fire that destroyed the building, remains undetermined as the owner of the property looks for somebody to lease or buy it.
Thakor Mistry of Sun Lodge LLC., the official owner of the property, said Quality Inn will not be rebuilding the hotel. Mistry told Inside the Corridor that he was working on a contract with a buyer, but could not give details about who the buyer was or what the property would be used for.
An aide to Mount Vernon Supervisor Dan Storck said that the owner had been interested in a project that would put storage units in the space, and Mistry confirmed that was a possibility. But the aide in the supervisor’s office said the county would be against such a venture because it does not mesh with the county’s Comprehensive Plan for the Route 1 corridor.
“The Supervisor is eager to see the site redevelop in accordance with the goals of Embark [Richmond Highway] and something that will serve the historic nature of that area,” the aide said.
In the meantime, the remains of the hotel do not appear to be facing demolition any time soon. Fairfax County did send a notice of violation to the owner of the property in January, according to the code compliance section of Fairfax’s website. The notice demanded that the site be secured.
Mistry confirmed that he received the notification from the county and said that code compliance officials were satisfied his efforts.
“We put up a fence and secured the [site],” said Mistry.
The Quality Inn & Suites building was constructed in 1974. Prior to being a Quality Inn & Suites it had been an Econo Lodge.
Sun Lodge LLC. purchased the property in 2005, according to tax records.
An investigation by the Fairfax County Fire Department found the 2015 blaze to be accidental.
