Hundreds of spaces in Huntington’s south garage remain blocked off. Here’s why.

The Huntington Metro station’s south garage, located directly off of the station’s North Kings Highway entrance, remains open at only partial capacity, and users can expect that to continue into the near future.

According to a WMATA customer service representative, the garage continues to be undergoing a structural analysis that began last summer and necessitated the closing of many spaces, catching users off guard.

“WMATA has a consultant conducting a thorough structural analysis of the portions of the garage that have visual deterioration to determine whether the deterioration observed presents issues in the capacity of the structure to serve daily parking and to make recommendations on next steps such as scope of needed repairs, etc.,” Jeremy Franklin said in an email.

The work is ongoing, and at this point there’s no timetable for reopening the spaces or possible repair work on the structure, Franklin said.

Approximately 350 spaces in the garage, including the entire top level, are closed. The entire garage was closed for five days in January “to facilitate inspection of tendons and sampling of concrete from the exposed decks of the structure necessary for a thorough” analysis, Franklin said.

Completed in 1983, Huntington’s south garage is the oldest in the WMATA system. The age of the station and visible deterioration of the structure prompted the analysis, Franklin said.

There’s no plans to close off any portions of the other two garages at Huntington. The north garage was rehabbed in 2009-2010, according to Franklin, and the east garage has only been open since 2008.
