The Cherry Arms Apartments were the 1st-place winner of the 2017 Mary Thonen Richmond Highway Beautification Awards, which were presented Wednesday by the Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation (SFDC).

Built in 1965 and located at 7131 Richmond Highway, Cherry Arms was selected for landscape improvements to the complex’s 5.8-acre property.

The Mount Vernon Square Apartments and the Mount Vernon Plaza shopping center, two of the largest properties in the Hybla Valley area, were awarded 2nd place and 3rd place, respectively.

“I would like to congratulate this year’s winner, Cherry Arms Apartments, for their magnificent landscape improvements,” SFDC Executive Director Edythe Kelleher said in a press release. “The Mary Thonen Awards recognize businesses that go the extra mile to make their properties, and Richmond Highway, beautiful. This is our way of saying ‘Thank you.’ Congratulations to this year’s winners.”

The Mary Thonen Awards, named after a longtime SFDC board member, are presented annually. Any business or apartment complex visible from Richmond Highway can enter, and winners are selected based on their “general aesthetics of the plantings and/or accent materials” and their consistent maintenance throughout the year.

Wednesday’s awards were presented by SFDC President Walter Clarke, who will soon be stepping down and taking over as the Mount Vernon District planning commissioner.

This year’s other finalists were:

  • City Side Apartments, of Huntington/North Gateway
  • Kentucky Fried Chicken, of Hybla Valley

  • The Beacon at Groveton, of Beacon Hill
