2 displaced by Hybla Valley-area fire

Two adults were displaced but nobody was injured by a fire Monday afternoon in the Hybla Valley area.

Firefighters from the county and City of Alexandria responded to a call around 12:45 p.m. in the 2500 block of Windbreak Drive (see map), according to a Fairfax County Fire and Rescue press release.

Neighbors who called 911 had reported seeing smoke coming from a dryer vent in the home, and when firefighters entered they found a fire in the basement. The firefighters quickly put out the fire and kept it from spreading beyond the basement, according to the release.

Nobody was home at the time of the fire, but two adults were displaced and are receiving assistance from the Red Cross, according to the release.

The fire was ruled to be accidental and caused by a malfunctioning clothes dryer, according to the fire department. Damage is estimated to be $20,000.
