Local high school teams play for district championships tonight

West Potomac Idaresit Ekpuk (33) and Da’Juan Bellfield (24) will try to lead the Wolverines to their second straight district title tonight.

Four local high school teams — the Edison girls, Hayfield boys, West Potomac boys and West Potomac girls — will be vying for district basketball championships tonight.

The West Potomac boys (21-3) will be looking for their second consecutive Patriot District championship against Woodson at 8 p.m. The game is at South County High School in Lorton (see map). 

The Wolverines and Cavaliers split their two regular season meetings, with each team winning on their home court. West Potomac’s three-point loss to Woodson (20-4) in January was their only blemish in district play en route to the Patriot’s regular season title. 

Winners of six straight, the West Potomac girls will be nevertheless be heavy underdogs in their matchup with T.C. Williams tonight at 6 p.m. at South County. The Titans (23-1) handily beat the Wolverines (16-7) during their two meetings earlier this year, and have not lost a game against Northern Region competition all season.

The Hayfield boys, regular-season champions in the Liberty District, play Madison at 8 p.m. at South Lakes High School in Reston (see map). Hayfield (20-4) split their two regular season matchups with the Warhawks (18-6).

After a slow start, the four-time defending 5A North Region champion Edison girls are once again in position to win the National District. The Eagles (15-7), who won the district’s regular season title, host second-seeded Wakefield (21-3) at 7 p.m. Edison beat Wakefield in both of their matchups this year, and the Eagles are 15-2 since an 0-5 start to the season.
