Police: Man leads officers on chase while drunk, is hit by own car

An Alexandria man faces a slew of charges after a police chase early Sunday morning that ended shortly after he was hit by his own car, according to the Fairfax County Police.

Police say the odd turn of events began around 1 a.m. when a 30-year-old man, ignored an officer trying to pull him over for an equipment violation near the intersection of Arlington Drive and Richmond Highway. The suspect continued driving, turning left onto Richmond Highway, according a police spokeswoman.

The suspect didn’t go far though, according to police. He allegedly made a left turn on Belvoir Drive, entered the Starbucks parking lot at 7511 Richmond Highway and then began heading north on the Route 1 service road.

The driver then turned right to get back onto Arlington Drive. He continued 2600 block of Arlington Drive before bailing out of the vehicle, according to police. The car, which was still moving forward, hit him. He tried to run away but was caught and arrested after a “brief foot chase,” according to police.

The driver was charged with DWI, possession of marijuana, driving on a revoked license, hit and run, disregarding police signal to stop, tint violation, and possession of open container while operating a motor vehicle. Court records indicate this is the suspect’s third DWI charge, with previous convictions in 2012 and 2015.

The police said Bonsu was not seriously injured.
