82-year-old man dies in Virginia Hills house fire

Firefighters from multiple stations responded to a fire at this home around 4 p.m. Saturday.

An 82-year-old man died after a fire Saturday afternoon in the Virginia Hills neighborhood near Telegraph Road.

The victim, who has not been identified, was found by firefighters after Fairfax Fire and Rescue personnel extinguished the fire in a one-story house at 3719 Logan Court. The man was taken by ambulance to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries. 

A cat in the house also died in the fire.

Fire officials say that smoke was showing from all four sides of the house when they arrived around 4 p.m. A neighbor said that flames were not visible from the street, but that a large amount of smoke poured from the house once firefighters entered and began engaging the blaze. Units from the Penn Daw, Mount Vernon and Franconia fire stations were among those that responded to the call. 

The cause of the fire is believed to be electrical in nature, the fire department said, and the investigation is continuing.
