The first real snowfall of the season hit the area Wednesday, leaving between 3-5 inches of wet snow in locations around Richmond Highway, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather was bad enough to cancel school in districts around the DMV, and close the federal and Fairfax County governments. As of 4:30 p.m., the Virginia State Police said they had been called to 382 crashes and assisted with 242 disabled or stuck vehicles around the state. However no major traffic incidents were reported locally, nor were there any significant power outages in the Route 1 area.

Fairfax County Public Schools will again be off Thursday. But aside from FCPS, most agencies and transit will be open or on a slightly modified schedule. The federal government will open two hours late on Thursday with the option for unscheduled leave or telework, while the Fairfax County government will open on time with unscheduled leave for employees who need it.

Metrorail will operate on a normal weekday schedule tomorrow, but Metrobus will start the day on “a light snow plan” with detours in effect on a route-by-route basis. Fairfax Connector will run on a normal schedule, but they are encouraging users to allow for extra time on their commutes because weather-related delays could be possible.
