The Giant Food in the Hayfield Center on Telegraph Road will be closing its doors after 32 years in business on Thursday, Jan. 25.

“It was a business decision to close the Telegraph Road store. We apologize to our customers for any inconvenience,” said Giant spokeswoman Felis Andrade.

Signs in the store say that prescriptions handled at the Giant’s pharmacy will be transferred to the nearby Kingstowne Giant at 5870 Kingstowne Blvd.

The Hayfield Giant has about 80 employees, and they will be given opportunities to work at other local Giants, Andrade said.

It’s unclear what, if anything, will replace the store. A message left with Beatty Management, who leases spaces in the Hayfield Center, was not immediately returned.

The location may not be ideal for another grocer. A popular Wegmans, which opened in 2015, is located less than two miles south on Telegraph Road. A new $30.8 million commissary on nearby Fort Belvoir also opened in March, and Kingstowne has a Safeway and Walmart in close proximity to its Giant.

Giant’s closing marks the second supermarket in the greater Richmond Highway area to close in the past 12 months. The Safeway at the Mount Vernon Square shopping center in Hybla Valley shut down last March. That space is still vacant and no replacement has been announced yet.
