In a month full of event and fundraisers to help fight cancer, this may just be the cutest.

Three small day cares in the Route 1 area got together Wednesday for the first annual “Kids Walk for Breast Cancer,” part of a grass-roots fundraiser for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Some kids walked, and others were pushed as the pink-clad group made its way from the Vernon Heights neighborhood down Richmond Highway and back through the neighborhood near Riverside Elementary School.

The day care centers involved were Koala Kids Daycare, Carter’s Child Care and Miss Ann’s House. Workers at the three day cares all had family members affected by breast cancer or other cancers, and came up with the idea to raise $10 per child to go to the Susan G. Komen foundation.

“Since this is breast cancer awareness month we thought it would be a good time to acknowledge those we have loved and lost, as well as teach the kids early on about goal setting and giving back,” said Lynnette Vango-Green, one of the daycare owners who organized the fundraiser.

In less than two weeks, the eleven children and their families exceeded the fundraiser’s goal, managing to raise $452.

“We are thankful for the support of our daycare family and friends who helped to make this small dream a big reality,” said Vango-Green.
