Police blotter: Pit bull shot during arrest of man wanted for armed robbery

A man wanted for armed robbery charges in Washington D.C. was arrested by Fairfax County Police on Tuesday after a foot pursuit near South Kings Highway that involved the shooting of the suspect’s dog, according to today’s police blotter.

The suspect, 26-year-old Shelton Coates of the Alexandria area, faces multiple charges, including possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of ammo by a felon, possession with intent to distribute cocaine and marijuana, having an unrestricted dog and obstruction/resisting arrest.

According to police, Coates was aspotted walking his dog with an acquaintance near the intersection of South Kings Highway and Brick Hearth Court around 8:20 p.m. Coates allegedly fled when approached by officers, and as the foot pursuit unfolded his dog charged an officer, according to the police. The officer fired one shot, which killed the dog.

No injuries to police or Coates were reported. The Metropolitan Police were informed of Coates’ arrest. 

Coates acquaintance does not face any charges, according to police.
