Mount Vernon grad’s killer sentenced

A Richmond man was sentenced last week to one year in prison for the killing of Samuel Kwarteng, a 2014 Mount Vernon graduate. Emmanuel Jordan, 20, had been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for shooting Kwarteng in April in a house near the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University, where Kwarteng attended college. The police deemed the shooting accidental, saying Jordan had pulled the weapon while pushing Kwarteng and another man out of his home when it went off.

How local board members voted on Stuart

The Fairfax County School board voted last week to rename JEB Stuart High School as Justice High School in a 7-4 vote. Lee District School Board representative Tamara Kaufax voted against the measure, while Mount Vernon District representive Karen Corbett Sanders did not vote because she had left the meeting, according to WashingtonPost.com. Corbett Sanders had voted earlier in the evening to rename the school after Col. Louis Mendez, a World War II hero who lived in Fairfax.

Tour de Mount Vernon deadline

Today is the last day you can register for the Tour de Mount Vernon bike ride on Nov. 4. The 35-mile ride, led by Mount Vernon Supervisor Dan Storck, begins at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton and explores the district. There is no walk-up registration.

Another amazing catch for West Po grad

Nebraska senior wide receiver De’Mornay Pierson-El, a 2014 graduate of West Potomac, has made a number of highlight-reel catches this season. He snagged another one Saturday evening in Nebraska’s 25-24 comeback win at Purdue, making a one-handed catch with a defender all over him. Pierson-El finished the game with five catches for 62 yards. 

Other local grads making plays this weekend:

Towson tight end Ellis Knudson, a 2014 graduate of Hayfield, caught a two-point conversion in the Tigers’ 18-17 upset of Delaware on Saturday.

UVA-Wise senior Carlton Griffith, a 2014 Mount Vernon graduate, finished with 51 yards rushing in the Cavs 65-0 win over Lynchburg in Division II action on Saturday.
