Road closure in Groveton extended to mid-September

VDOT announced today that Mary Baldwin Drive between University Drive and Smithway Drive will be closed until mid-September.

The block, which borders the Bucknell Elementary School property, has been closed since early August for stormwater pipe replacement. Originally work had been scheduled to be completed by the end of August, but VDOT says weather issues have delayed the project.

The metal pipe needed replacement due to corrosion, and the work is not related to the recent renovation at Bucknell, said VDOT spokesman Michael Murphy.

“The new pipe is actually in place, the closure extension is needed because there’s an existing gas line that has to be reconnected,” Murphy said.

The section of closed road crosses the Paul Spring Branch stream, and connects the Beacon Hill Road area of Groveton to the area south and west of Bucknell Elementary. Drivers who regularly use the road must detour to Richmond Highway for the fastest access north or south of Bucknell.
