A 25-year-old man is in critical condition after a collision between an SUV and a pedestrian on Richmond Highway yesterday afternoon.

According to the police, the man was crossing the highway before the intersection of Lukens Lane when he began running and hit the side of a 2009 Chevy Tahoe that was traveling southbound. The man was not in a crosswalk, according to police.

The pedestrian, who police believe may be a resident a local homeless shelter, was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital on the police’s Fairfax1 helicopter.

The driver of the Tahoe, a 34-year-old woman from the Fort Belvoir area, and three children who were passengers were not injured.

Speed was not an issue in the accident, police said, and the driver of the Tahoe is not facing any charges. A police spokesman said alcohol may have played a role in the incident for the pedestrian.
