The Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department will be offering free haircuts and school supplies at a back-to-school event Wednesday at the Gum Springs Community Center.

Professional barbers, stylists and firefighters with their own hair-cutting skills will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free backpacks filled with school supplies will also be distributed, and there will be kid-themed entertainment including clowns, face painting, a moon bounce and tours of fire trucks and other public safety equipment.

Children under 9 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

This is the 8th year the fire department has put on the back-to-school event at Gum Springs, according the Battalion Chief Will Bailey, who helps organize the event. Barbers cut about 90 kids’ hair last year at Gum Springs, Bailey said.

Other groups on hand Wednesday will include the police and sheriff’s department officers.

The Gum Springs Community Center is located at 8100 Fordson Road (see map).
