Three men were hospitalized last night after a police chase ended in a violent crash near the intersection of Fordson Road and Richmond Highway, according to police.

The stolen car, a Buick Century, hit a light pole after a pursing police cruiser made contact with the vehicle in an attempt to end the chase. The Buick hit the pole at a high enough speed to cause the vehicle to split into multiple pieces.

All three men are expected to survive,  a police spokeswoman said Friday afternoon. Charges are pending and the incident remains under investigation, police said.

The chase began after the Buick was spotted leaving a gas station at the intersection Reddick Avenue and Richmond Highway in the Woodlawn area, according to the spokeswoman. The car did not pull over, and a pursuit began on northbound Richmond Highway.

Between the intersections of Belford Drive and Fordson Road — approximately 1.5 miles north of where the chase began — an officer executed what the spokeswoman called a PIT (Pursuit Intervention Technique) maneuver.

Northbound Richmond Highway was closed down after the crash and did not reopen until a little before 4 a.m.

Police said the car was stolen in Washington D.C. earlier this week.

Detectives and staff from FCPD’s Crash Reconstruction Unit, Major Crimes Division, and the Internal Affairs Bureau are all investigating the crash.
