Hyland honored at gala

United Community Ministries hosted their annual Give from the Heart Gala last week. The event, held at the U.S. Patent and Trademark office in Alexandria, paid special tribute to former Mount Vernon Supervisor Gerry Hyland, who retired in 2015. The event is a major fundraiser for UCM, and raised more than $190,000 for the Richmond Highway-based charity.

Burned hotel demolished

The ruins of the former Quality Inn and Suites at the intersection of Richmond Highway and Jeff Todd Way started to get removed Friday, according to Mount Vernon District Supervisor Dan Storck. The hotel burned in a massive April 2015 fire, and had stood vacant since — much to the ire of many residents.
