A man who lived in the Hybla Valley area was killed Saturday morning in a shooting near Springfield.

Enrique Vanterpool, 27, was shot and killed during a dispute inside an auto body shop around 7:20 a.m., according to the Fairfax County Police.

The shooting happened at TMT Auto Body & Restoration, located in the 5700 block of General Washington Drive, near Interstate 395 and Edsall Road. According to police, there was an argument between acquaintances that escalated into violence.

One person was in custody as of Saturday morning, police said, but no name has been released yet and no charges have been announced.

Shari McCallum, Vanterpool’s older sister, said that a gathering had been held overnight at the auto body shop. At some point a dispute over a girl involving one of Vanterpool’s friends and another person sparked a confrontation between two groups, according to McCallum.

Guns were drawn as the argument intensified, and Vanterpool was shot in the chest, McCallum said.

Wrong place, wrong situation,” said McCallum. “It shouldn’t have went down the way it went.”

Vanterpool lived with his girlfriend and six-month-old son in the Mount Vernon Square apartments off of Richmond Highway. He is also survived by a younger brother and his mother, who lives in Panama.

Vanterpool was originally from New York, and moved to this area in 2002, his sister said. He’d recently had a child with his longtime girlfriend.

“He was definitely happy to be a father for the first time,” said McCallum.

McCallum said that although her brother had been through struggles, he was a caring person who looked out for those close to him.

“Everybody has their faults. I’m not saying that he’s perfect. But he definitely had a good heart,” said McCollum. “He was always a happy person, he was always loyal. If he had something to give, he would.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help pay for Vanterpool’s funeral expenses.
